CityCycle
In 2010, Brisbane City Council will introduce Citycycle, a new form of environmentally friendly public transport. CityCycle will be a European style bike hire scheme similar to Cyclocity in Brussels and Sevici in Seville.
CityCycle will allow users to:
- pick up a bike from one of 150 bike stations
- go for a ride
- return the bike to another bike station
The bike stations will be located to link with existing bikeways, busways, buses, trains and ferries within inner-city Brisbane.
Benefits of CityCycle
CityCycle will provide a healthy and cost effective transport option to travel around the inner city. This will help to:
- reduce traffic congestion
- ease demand for inner city parking
- create a cleaner, greener Brisbane
It is part of a $100 million investment program over four years to construct more bikeways, shared pathways, local links and supporting infrastructure.
CityCycle network
When complete, up to 2000 bikes will be available for pick up and drop off via a swipe card at 150 bike parking stations. Bike stations will mostly be located in the inner city area and in the following suburbs:
- Brisbane City
- Fortitude Valley
- Kangaroo Point
- Milton
- New Farm
- Newstead
- St Lucia
- South Brisbane
- Toowong
- West End
Cost
You will be able to subscribe annually or quarterly, or be a casual user. Both subscribers and casual users are allowed unlimited use of the bikes. Trips are free of charge provided they are less than 30 minutes long. After 30 minutes, additional charges will apply.
- subscribers will pay about 18 cents per day
- casual users, including tourists, will pay about $12 per day
Bike hire and features
Anybody who is 17 years or older will be able to hire a bike.
CityCycle bikes are durable and also comfortable. Features include:
- three gears
- a lock and chain for temporary lock-up when away from a station
- a covered chain and brake wires so clothes can be kept clean
- basket on the front
- easily adjustable seat
- a step-through frame that allows you to mount and dismount with ease
Safety features include:

Road safety and rules
Under Queensland road rules legislation, all cyclists are required to wear a helmet when cycling. A cyclist can be fined if a helmet is not worn when riding.
When cycling be sure to follow these cycling safety tips.
All subscribers to CityCycle will receive a road rules guide. Road safety tips and bike information will also be displayed on the handle bars.
Related projects
CityCycle will link to CityGlider rapid transit bus service, a Council transport project being introduced in 2010.
CityGlider buses will provide a continuous link between the West End ferry terminal and Teneriffe ferry terminal at Newstead. There will be access to key destinations along the corridor.
CityCycle and CityGlider will offer the maximum benefit to residents, commuters, and tourists through:
- interchanges with CityCat and CityFerry services
- interchanges with bus ways and rail connections
- easy access to key CBD attractions
