Clearways and solid yellow lines

Clearways are on some busy streets to improve traffic flow and safety.

Don't set down or pick up passengers in clearways, even when stopped at traffic lights or in traffic. Clearways are tow away zones.

Don't stop or park at any time in zones marked by solid yellow lines on the road. These 'No Stopping' zones are usually not signed.

Vehicle towed away

If a 'Clearway' or 'No Stopping' zone is classified as a 'Tow Away' zone (as indicated on the sign), the police or Brisbane City Council can have your car towed away, as well as giving you an infringement notice.

For information about what to do to get your car back, phone Council on 07 3403 8888.

When collecting your vehicle from the tow yard, you may have to pay a release fee. Council will not accept any responsibility for the inconvenience to you or for any damage to your car during the towing.

Commercial Vehicle Loading Zones

Commercial Vehicle Loading Zones enable vehicles to stop for a maximum period of 20 minutes (unless otherwise signed) while actively engaged in loading and unloading of goods.

Vehicles that are entitled to use Commercial Vehicle Loading Zones include:

  • utilities, including dual-cab utilities, trucks, vans and panel vans which do not have any rear seating and/or seatbelts
  • any other vehicle type, which has been modified for carrying goods, for example by removing all seating and/or seatbelts in the rear, is also entitled to use Commercial Vehicle Loading Zones.  The vehicle must first be re-classified by Queensland Transport and carry a Registration Label reflecting the same
  • a taxi or limousine driver can use a loading zone only while actively picking up or dropping off passengers.  They are not allowed to wait for fares in these zones
  • all other passenger vehicles are not permitted to use commercial vehicle loading zones unless they obtain a commercial vehicle permit

Bus and transit lanes

Bus and transit lanes improve the speed and reliability of bus and taxi services.

They generally operate during peak hours. Check traffic signs for specific times.

Bus lanes:

  • are for buses, taxis, bicycles and emergency vehicles
  • can be used by buses and taxis to drop off or pick up passengers
  • can't be used for stopping or parking by any other vehicle during operating hours

Transit lanes:

  • are for buses, taxis, motorcycles, bicycles and emergency vehicles
  • can be used by buses or taxis to drop off or pick up passengers
  • can't be used for stopping or parking by any other vehicle during operating times. Other vehicles may travel in a transit lane if they comply with the transit lanes conditions

Parking near footpaths, driveways, intersections or bus stops

When you are parking make sure that you:

  • don't park on footpaths or footpath ramps
  • don't park or partly block across driveways or footpaths

Unless otherwise signed, these rules apply at intersections and bus stops:

  • park at least 10 metres from an intersection without traffic lights
  • if there are traffic lights, park at least 20 metres away from the intersection
  • park at least 20 metres behind a bus stop, or at least 10 metres in front

You can be fined if you don't follow these rules. Find out how to pay or appeal a parking fine.

Abandoned vehicles

It is an offence to leave a vehicle on the roadway or footpath once the vehicle registration has expired. The vehicle should be relocated onto private property to avoid an infringement and possible removal of vehicle by Council.

For vehicles believed to be abandoned, Council must follow legal procedures before the vehicle can be removed from the roadway or footpath. This process can take up to eight weeks to complete.

If you believe your vehicle has been removed by Council or would like to report an abandoned vehicle, email Council or phone 07 3403 8888.

Council car parks

The Council operates two public car parks in Brisbane:

You can pay your monthly car park pass card online.

Public Holiday parking

Some parking restrictions do not apply on public holidays. Parking signs that specify certain days of the week do not apply on public holidays.

If a parking sign does not specify certain days, for example 'P15 minutes', that sign applies on public holidays and a fine can be issued.

Public holidays are:

  • New Year's Day
  • Australia Day
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Anzac Day
  • Labour Day
  • Queen's Birthday
  • RNA Show Day
  • Christmas Day
  • Boxing Day

On other days not specified as public holidays parking restrictions apply as normal.

Parking motorcycles in the city

Motorcycle parking tips

When parking your motorcycle in the city you should:

  • not park outside signed footpath bay areas
  • dismount or walk your motorcycle while you are on the footpath, or use the kerb ramp provided directly into some footpath bays
  • not block other motorcycles if the bay is full, instead find alternative parking

You should also note:

  • motorcycle-only pay and display tickets cannot be used in normal car parking bays
  • at metered spaces, when you buy your pay and display ticket you will receive two copies, one for display on your motorcycle under the seat strap or in a holder, the other for your personal records
  • more than one motorcycle or scooter per bay is allowed
  • if you choose to park in a normal car space, only one vehicle per space is allowed, so the same parking meter rates and restrictions for a cars apply
