Lord Mayor

Lord Mayor Campbell NewmanIn the current economic climate, Council recognises that many local families are being forced to tighten their belts. That’s why Brisbane City Council is working harder than ever to deliver better value for ratepayers, while addressing the traffic congestion and public transport needs of our city.

Despite difficult world conditions, Council remains in the enviable position of achieving our lowest debt levels since the 1920s. Following a recent ‘strong’ financial rating in Queensland Treasury Corporation’s (QTC) credit review, Council is firmly focused on delivering the day-to-day services that make residents’ lives that little bit easier and more enjoyable.

Improvements to day-to-day services include increased regularity for suburban mowing, street sweeping and litter collection. Our grass cutting ‘flying gangs’ are also working hard to deal with summer growth.

Increased and improved landscape maintenance is also underway, with re-mulching and replanting taking place on road corridor landscape sites across the city.

Council’s 10 anti-graffiti squads continue to work hard in cleaning up more vandalism across our city. In addition, the joint state government and Brisbane City Council ‘Taskforce Against Graffiti' is starting to tackle this problem by arresting those responsible for this vandalism.

Finally, I’d like to remind you that Council, through our Green Heart CitySmart Program, is offering Brisbane residents $50 cash-back when they use the Queensland Government's ClimateSmart Service. Council's free plants program also continues - offering residents two free native trees by simply providing a rates notice.

While 2009 will no doubt be a challenging year for us all, I look forward to working with you and for you to ensure Brisbane remains Australia’s most liveable city.
