Fortitude Valley renewal
Fortitude Valley has a unique place within Brisbane's urban environment and history. It has a distinct identity and cosmopolitan character, reflected by the range of residential, commercial, cultural and industrial uses.
Urban renewal and change has been a part of the Valley's history and will continue in the future.
Fortitude Valley's location to public transport and its close connection with the Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding residential areas makes it highly suitable to accommodate new growth.
Draft Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan
Over the last year and a half, Urban Renewal Brisbane has been preparing the draft Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan in consultation with the community and other stakeholders.
On 31 March 2009, Brisbane City Council approved the draft Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan as a proposed amendment to the Brisbane City Plan 2000 and gave permission for it to be referred to the state government.
The draft Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan:
- increases building heights and densities
- establishes a 'special context area' that reinforces and protects the Fortitude Valley’s special character and heritage, while providing for the development of landmark buildings
- improves the public area through footpath widenings and the creation of cross blocks links, small scale spaces, new public open space and plazas
- extends the Special Entertainment Precinct buffer
- reinforces the Valley as a major entertainment, cultural, tourism, retail and business centre
- reinforces a strong mix between land use and public transport

Next stages in the Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Planning process
- The draft Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan will be sent to the state government in early April 2009 for its first state interest check.
- On return from the state, the community and affected stakeholders will have the opportunity to have their say and provide formal feedback on the draft Neighbourhood Plan. This public submissions period will be held in mid to late 2009.
- The draft Neighbourhood Plan will be reviewed based on public submission feedback and sent to Council for endorsement.
- The draft Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan will be sent back to the state government for its second state interest check.
- Once the draft Neighbourhood Plan comes back from the state, it will be once again sent to Council for adoption and inclusion in the Brisbane City Plan 2000.
Community Planning Team
Council established a Community Planning Team (CPT) as an advisory body during the development of the draft Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan.
The CPT worked with Council planners, urban designers and other specialists to help prepare the draft Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan. They also provided feedback and recommendations.
