Dangerous, menacing and restricted dogs
Dangerous dogs
Brisbane City Council may declare your dog dangerous if it:
- has bitten or attacked a person or animal
- was trained or kept as a guard dog
- was declared dangerous by another local government
Once your dog has been declared a 'dangerous dog', you will be given certain conditions to follow.

Menacing dogs
The state government has passed laws introducing the category of 'menacing' for regulated dogs. A dog may be declared ‘menacing’ if it displays menacing behaviour and causes fear for a person or animal.
Once your dog has been declared ‘menacing', you will be given certain conditions to follow.

Prohibited breeds
The following breeds of dogs, including those that substantially meet the description of these breeds, are banned in Brisbane:
- American pit-bull terrier
- dogo Argentino
- fila Brasileiro
- Japanese tosa
- presa Canario
