Project overview
Brisbane’s premier civic space, King George Square, is undergoing a ‘revitalisation’.
The Square was developed as a public space area adjoining Brisbane City Hall in the 1970s.
Its revitalisation will create a space that reflects the historic values of the Square, as well as its evolving roles as a destination, transit hub and ceremonial and civic heart for the city.
Council has integrated the revitalisation of King George Square with the construction of the Inner Northern Busway.
Our new look
The design proposal from UrbisJHD entitled 'King George Square: A Space in Transition' was selected as the winning entry following a national design competition. The six short-listed designs were presented for public comment in City Hall in late 2006, prior to the announcement of the winning entry in September 2006.
Once completed, the Square will reflect Brisbane’s historic values as well as its evolving role as the civic heart to the city.

KING GEORGE SQUARE: A SPACE IN TRANSITION The square will provide an elegant platform for events that works in tandem with an exciting new deck structure to reintroduce life into the square.
Integrated transport, high quality materials, sub-tropical design, and simplicity of form mark an evolution in the sophistication of Brisbane’s public realm and create an iconic space in transition." |

Our Plan
There are four major milestones involved in the revitalisation of King George Square:
Milestone 1 involved construction of the base structure of the Grand Ramp and was completed in late 2007.
Milestone 2 involved repaving and landscaping to the side of the Square nearest City Hall. This work commenced in September 2008 and will be completed this month.
Milestone 3 commenced in January 2009 and involves construction of the hallmark features of the square (outlined in more detail in the latest

Milestone 4 involves completion of the revitalisation and a subsequent launch event, scheduled for mid October 2009.
Current status
Work on Milestone 2 was completed in early 2009 and construction of the key features of the square is now underway.
Access
Throughout construction, pedestrian access through the square will be restricted, however a pedestrian thoroughfare will be maintained at all times between Ann and Adelaide Street. This access may be altered over the course of the construction period so please follow directional signage.
Transport Information Centre
Council has investigated the need for a Transport Information Centre as part of the new Inner Northern Busway and King George Square redevelopment. 1202 people completed an online survey conveying their views about the Transport Information Centre.
