Chinatown Mall redevelopment
Background
The Chinatown Mall was first opened in 1987 and remains one of Brisbane’s iconic cultural spaces.
The pagodas which were sited in the Mall had deteriorated since their installation and safety concerns prompted their removal in 2008. Other facilities in the Mall have also reached the end of their service life.
In recognition of the importance of this community space, Brisbane City Council has committed $8 million to redevelop the Chinatown Mall.
Community consultation
Community consultation began at the 2008 Moon Festival. Local residents and mall visitors were invited to share their views on how they wanted the Chinatown Mall redeveloped.
Chinatown Mall business owners were invited to provide their comments through a survey. Consultation with other key stakeholders also provided feedback for inclusion in the design.
Design
A design has been developed with the assistance of architects from Brisbane’s sister city, Shenzhen China in consultation with local designers Urbis. A team of architects from Shenzhen visited the Chinatown Mall in November 2008 to provide guidance on cultural themes and feng shui principles.
The master plan was endorsed by Council and released on 16 December 2008. The design incorporates community consultation feedback.
The official opening date of the redeveloped Chinatown Mall is Sunday, 14 February 2010.
