Chinatown Mall redevelopment

Fu dog statue in Chinatown MallBackground

The Chinatown Mall was first opened in 1987 and remains one of Brisbane’s iconic cultural spaces.

The pagodas which were sited through the Mall had deteriorated since their installation and safety concerns prompted their removal in 2008. Other facilities in the Mall have also reached the end of their service life.

In recognition of the importance of this community space, Brisbane City Council has committed $8 million to redevelop the Chinatown Mall in 2009.

Community consultation

Community consultation began at the 2008 Moon Festival. Local residents and mall visitors were invited to share their views on what they would like to see in a redeveloped Chinatown Mall.

Chinatown Mall business owners were invited to provide their comments through a survey. Consultation with other key stakeholders has also provided feedback for inclusion in the design.

Design

A design has been developed with the assistance of architects from Brisbane’s sister city, Shenzhen in China inconsultation with local designers Urbis. A team of architects from Shenzhen visited the Chinatown Mall in November 2008 to provide guidance on cultural themes and Feng Shui principles.

the master plan of the design was endorsed by Council and released on 16 December 2008. The design incorporates elements identified from community consultation.

The Chinatown Mall redevelopment is scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.
