Free Plants Program

Brisbane City Council offers the Free Plants Program to residents, schools and community groups.

Residential properties

Brisbane ratepayers, Housing Commission and Defence Housing residents are entitled to receive two free native plants each year. You can choose from a variety of:

  • free trees
  • plants
  • groundcovers
  • climbers
  • shrubs
  • palms

You can download the latest version of Adobe Reader for free.

If you are renting or leasing a property, contact your body corporate or the property owner, who will need to send a written application to Council on behalf of tenants.

Apply for free plants

To apply for free plants:

  1. Complete an application form.  These are available from Customer Service Centres, Libraries and local Councillor's ward offices
  2. If you are the owner of a residential property, you must present your first rates notice of the current year.  Housing Commission and Defence Housing residents will need to present documented evidence of rental payment. 
  3. The completed application form is then stamped as 'approved'. 
  4. You can then exchange your stamped application form for two free plants at any of the nurseries listed below.

You can also ask Council to plant trees on your local street as part of the Street Trees Program.

Schools and community groups

Free plants are available for:

  • schools, community groups and charitable organisations - up to 50 free plants
  • clubs on Council leased land - 20 free plants
  • schools celebrating Arbor Day - number varies

Schools and groups need to describe the extent and purpose of their planting project in the application.

Council will advise groups, schools and clubs where to collect free plants when their application is approved.
