Right to Information

Brisbane City Council operates under the Queensland Government Right to Information Act (RTI Act 2009) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act 2009), which commenced on 1 July 2009.

The RTI Act 2009 and Chapter 3 of the IP Act 2009 replace the former Queensland Freedom of Information Act 1992.

Accessing Council information

There are a number of ways to access information held by Council. Lodging a formal Right to Information application can be a costly or lengthy process. Before taking this step you may wish to consider the following options:

  • check the list of documents available through the publication scheme
  • phone Council on 07 3403 8888, or visit Council to see if the information you require is available via other means
  • check the A-Z list

Application forms

The Right to Information application forms are available by visiting Council, or can be downloaded from the Queensland Government website. You can then send the application form to Council by:

RTI and IP Officer
Brisbane City Council
GPO Box 1434
Brisbane Qld 4001

Alternatively, you can lodge your completed application form with payment by visiting Council.

Council does not have an electronic system for application payment. If you email or fax the completed form, you can either complete the credit card authority on the form, or a Council Officer will contact you to arrange payment of the relevant fee.

Council’s Publication Scheme

The RTA Act 2009 also requires Council to publish a list of information on its website that is routinely available to residents. This is known as a Publications Scheme. The information in the Publication Scheme is grouped into seven classes.
