Moorooka Ward
Moorooka Ward comprises the southern suburbs of Acacia Ridge, Archerfield, Coopers Plains, Moorooka, Nathan, Salisbury, Tarragindi, and parts of Rocklea and Sunnybank. It’s placed 7km from the city nestled at the base of Toohey Forest.
It’s a vibrant area with a mix of cultures. The area is undergoing change and renewal with many families seeking to make it their home. The ward boasts over 80 parks with facilities and play equipment, including walking tracks through Toohey Forest and Oxley Common.
Moorooka Ward is serviced by both buses and trains, and is close to industry, Archerfield airport and the vibrant Brisbane Markets. It has a range of educational facilities including state and private schools, TAFE and Griffith University.
There is also a direct public transport link to Queensland University and a range of shopping areas including the rejuvenated Moorooka and Oxley local shopping strips.
Councillor Steve Griffiths
Steve has been Councillor for Moorooka Ward since 2004, and is currently a member of the Brisbane Lifestyle Committee.
Steve was responsible for co-founding the Moorooka Greening Group. He has also served as Chairperson of the Moorooka Street Festival and Toohey Forest Reference Group and as a member of the Oxley Creek Catchment Association.
Before being elected to Council, Steve worked as a social worker and a teacher with particular interests in the fields of community development and special education.
Since becoming a Councillor, Steve has worked with residents and local community groups to achieve:
- a trial to divert trucks and heavy vehicles away from local schools and the shopping strip at Moorooka
- improved bus services for locals including securing extra services to meet demand for the 124/125 route through Moorooka and Salisbury
- improvements to many local parks and sporting facilities including Alexander Park, Beryl Roberts Park, Tonk Street Park and Cawonga Park
- planting of over 2000 local street trees with the support of local schools, bush care and greening groups
- celebration of our unique community, through events such as the Oxley Street Festival, the Moorooka Australia Day Festival, Seniors Concerts, K-9 Capers and regular outdoor family movies
