Green and active transport

In 2026, Brisbane will have a network of greenways – safe laneways, walkways and bikeways for pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchairs, prams and micro-electric vehicles – linking neighbourhoods to key destinations throughout the city. Our public transport will excel in service, amenity, frequency, routing, information, affordability and safety.

Targets

  • Brisbane’s estimated 1,700 kilometre bikeways network will have been completed
  • 41% of travelling in morning peak period will be by walking, cycling or public transport
  • 80% of residents, visitors and workers will walk, cycle or undertake daily physical activity for fitness and fun

Brisbane City Council has released the Draft Brisbane Active Transport Strategy 2012-2026.

The Active Transport Strategy aims to create a high quality, connected, accessible pathway network which will attract people of all ages to walk and cycle.

City's progress

Council's current achievements:

  • over 1070km of the on and off-road bikeway network has been completed
  • the CityCycle bike hire scheme is operating from over 100 locations in the inner city
  • bus patronage was over 78 million trips in 2010-11
  • 84% of Council’s bus fleet are wheel chair accessible
  • 19 CityCats now operate across the ferry network increasing the frequency of services during peak hours
  • Council has assisted 48% of primary schools develop an Active School Travel Plan to reduce congestion and promote walking, cycling, catching public transport and car-pooling. In 2010, a 35% reduction in family only trips to and from the 21 participating schools was achieved
