Graduate Development Program

Brisbane City Council's Graduate Development Program is a two-year program offered to university graduates who want to build on the knowledge and skills developed during their study.

As a Council graduate, you will work in a number of different areas within your discipline while learning alongside industry professionals and experts in your field. Graduates are provided with four six-month placements (rotations) during their two-year program.

Program structure

The program includes:

  • professionally designed and facilitated learning and development program such as leadership, professional identity, networking and confidence, organisational behaviour, change management and customer focus
  • help to achieve professional membership in your field (e.g. PRIA, CPA, Engineering Australia)
  • development days to network with other graduates within Council
  • experienced mentors
  • opportunities to get involved in Council's big projects

Applicants for 2013

Council is likely to be seeking graduates in the following disciplines for the 2013 intake:

  • civil, water and electrical engineering (degree)
  • business analysis (degree)
  • finance/accounting (degree)
  • marketing (BBus with a Marketing or Public Relations major)
  • human resources
  • urban planning
  • workplace health and safety

Entry requirements

You must have completed or be nearing the end of your study in the degrees listed above to be eligible. Graduates who completed their studies in 2010 or 2011 are also encouraged to apply.

Note: As our graduate roles are permanent positions, applications can only be accepted from Australian citizens and people who hold permanent residency status in Australia or New Zealand citizenship. Council cannot offer sponsorship or visa assistance for graduate roles.

Application process

Applications for the Graduate Development Program usually open in March each year. Successful candidates will be offered positions in July, and will commence work at Council in January the following year.

Job details will be advertised on Council's website, the university Career Hubs and some of the online graduate career services.

You will need to complete an online application that includes:

  • a resume
  • a cover letter outlining your interest in one of our graduate disciplines, who you really are and what you are passionate about
  • a transcript of your academic results to date

The graduate recruitment process can take up to three months and may involve:

  • an online questionnaire
  • one or more interviews
  • a medical assessment (for some roles)
  • reference checks
