Seniors' Strategy

Council released the Draft Seniors' Strategy in November 2011. The Draft Seniors Strategy recognises the important contribution seniors make to the city and focuses on what Council can do to support seniors' participation in our community.

To develop the strategy, Council conducted the Seniors' Strategy survey in April, May and June 2010. View the results of the Seniors' Strategy survey

Seniors' library services

Council libraries provide:

  • quiet reading spaces and lounge areas
  • large print books and audio books on cassette and CD-ROM
  • topics of interest to seniors including retirement, financial planning and gardening

Council libraries offer seniors the opportunity to:

  • sign up for free internet training courses
  • join a book club or book talk
  • take part in a seniors club
  • become a member of a writing club
  • take part in information sessions and entertainment
  • use the online catalogue called eLibCat
  • gain new skills using eLibCat's online tutorials

Rubbish collection

Good Neighbour Clean Up Project

The Good Neighbour Clean-Up Project provides a rubbish collection service for the disadvantaged. The service is for elderly residents or those with a disability who have no means to transport rubbish outside the normal wheelie bin service. For more information, contact Council.

Rates remissions

A rates remission is available for owner occupiers and pensioners. A pensioner must hold one of the following:

  • current Queensland Centrelink pensioner concession card
  • Veterans Affairs pensioner concession card
  • Veteran Affairs gold card

Dog registration rebates

You are entitled to a rebate on your dog registration if:

  • the dog is desexed
  • you hold a current Centrelink pensioner concession card
  • you hold a Veterans' Affairs repatriation health card (for all conditions)
  • you are a current member of Dogs Queensland or the Greyhound Racing Control Board of Queensland

Immunisation

Council provides free immunisations to seniors.

Seniors' legal service

For over 60's experiencing domestic violence, contact the Caxton Legal Centre. The service provides:

  • advice and information on how to respond to abuse such as intimidation and harassment
  • assistance in planning to prevent abuse
  • limited counselling and legal representation
