Vehicle emissions testing

Brisbane City Council is addressing the diesel vehicles' emissions problem in the commercial transport sector. With the support of the Clean Air Strategy, Council provides emission testing services for Queensland heavy diesel vehicles. Over 700 Council and 400 non-Council diesel vehicles' emissions have been tested. Council has the only state accredited vehicle emission testing (VET) facility.

The standard DT80 test involves:

  1. Restraining a vehicle on a rolling-road dynamometer to simulate normal driving conditions.
  2. The exhaust emissions are captured and analysed according to Australian Standards (rule 147A).
  3. The testing unit measures oxides of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, particle emissions and opacity.

The VET facility can also test emissions from alternative fuels.

Testing benefits

Testing benefits include:

  • federal government diesel fuel credit scheme eligibility (17 cents per litre)
  • emissions or harmful pollutants reduction
  • vehicle fault identification
  • improvement of vehicle performance and resale value

The test also provides:

  • an emission results report
  • a horsepower and torque output reading
  • a certificate of compliance

You can also claim diesel fuel tax credit if your vehicle has a minimum gross mass of 4.5 tonnes and was manufactured before 1996.
