WaterSmart Strategy
As our city grows, we are faced with a number of challenges including an increased population, more demands on our open space and parklands, changes to our climate, and the quality and condition of our infrastructure. We need to be more conscious of our use, reuse and care of water in response to these challenges.
To guide Brisbane towards the goal of becoming Australia's most sustainable and water smart city, Brisbane City Council has now finalised its WaterSmart Strategy, a process which began in 2009.
Brisbane must become a water smart city to ensure:
- our waterways are healthy for future generations
- our water resources and systems are sustainable
- water conserving designs are used for buildings, public spaces, roads and services
Redevelopment process
There are five key steps in the redevelopment process of Council's WaterSmart Strategy:
- Council started conversations broadly to understand how Brisbane can become a water smart city.
- Council explored ideas, issues and opportunities. Forums were held, and strategy options were developed.
- The Draft WaterSmart Strategy was prepared, and released for public consultation.
- The final WaterSmart Strategy is released.
- The WaterSmart Strategy will be put into action: Brisbane becomes a water smart city.
