Gardens' facilities and services
The Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha are open every day of the year from 8am - 5.30pm in summer (September to March) and 8am - 5pm in winter (April to August). There are numerous picnic areas available throughout the Gardens. To protect the plants, dogs are not permitted in the Gardens.
The Gardens also include the Queensland Herbarium, Planetarium, Mt Coot-tha Library and Botanical (cafe, functions, events). Each of these facilities has its own opening hours. Find more information below.
The Queensland Herbarium is the centre for research and information on Queensland flora, vegetation and plant communities.
Herbarium staff are involved in the discovery and naming of around 30 Queensland plant species each year.
A collection of about 775,000 preserved plant specimens is held at the Herbarium. The species are mainly from Queensland and represent more than 230 years of history.
You can visit the plant identification area at the Herbarium. Group tours are also available.
The Brisbane Botanic Gardens also offers a limited free plant identification service. You can take your plant specimens to the reception area of the Gardens' Administration building for identification. Plant specimens need to include leaves with flowers and/or fruit.
When you deliver the specimens, you'll need to complete a Request for Plant Identification form.
