Queen Street Mall smoking ban
Brisbane City Council invited Brisbane residents and visitors to have their say through surveys and information sessions regarding smoking in the Queen Street Mall. The overwhelming response from both residents and businesses demanded that action be taken. A total of 82 per cent of people surveyed wanted a total ban on smoking in the Queen Street Mall.
Why did it take until 1 September 2011 to implement the no-smoking law?
The Queensland Government is responsible for legislation governing smoking in public places and has approved legislation that allows Council to implement the new no smoking local law in the Queen Street Mall. As a result, Council is restricting smoking in the Queen Street Mall by implementing the Smoke Free Places Local Law 2011 as of September 1, 2011.
How will the no-smoking law in Queen Street Mall be enforced?
Council’s strategy has been to undertake an awareness campaign. People observed smoking in the Queen Street Mall can expect initial warnings from Council officers before an infringement is issued. It is anticipated that the highly visible signage identifying the no-smoking boundaries, combined with warnings and the ability for infringements to be issued, will curb the behaviour of smokers in the Queen Street Mall.

The fine is $200.
What is the infringement process?
People observed smoking in the Queen Street Mall will be asked to cease. Only those members of the public who continue to smoke after receiving a warning will be issued with an infringement.
