Full assessment - advertising devices

Some types of advertising devices in certain areas require a full assessment application. If you haven’t already, follow the steps for does the advertising device need approval to check the zone and constraints for your property.

A full assessment is always required if the proposed sign location is a heritage place, adjoining a heritage place, commercial character building or in the Queen Street or Valley Malls.

Applications for multiple devices

You can apply for multiple devices on one property in one application.

For multiple devices on a large development, submit a single application as an advertising package.

You need to submit separate applications for multiple devices on multiple properties.

Definition of large development and advertising package

Large development: means a development where the impact of advertising devices is intensified because of the scale of individual signs or the exhibition of multiple types of sign, both on and off a site. Examples include shopping centres, motor vehicle saleyards and new residential estates.

Advertising package: means all advertising devices proposed to be installed, erected or displayed on, or in relation to, a large development including a shopping centre, motor vehicle saleyard or new residential estate.

How to apply

Before you apply

In addition to an application under the Local Law, the device may require a building approval under the Building Act 1975 (Qld). Contact a building certifier for advice as to whether the device requires building approval.

Fees

Payment of an application fee and annual permit fee per each advertising device is required upon lodgement of your application with Council.

Supporting documents

Prepare the attachments required for your online application as Word, PDF or JPG files. Required attachments include:

  • site plans with location of all existing structures and proposed signage
  • device/s design and construction details (either photos or drawings showing size, shape etc.).
Owner’s consent

If you are not the owner of the premises, you will need to upload a completed owner's consent form (Word - 13kb)

An owner can be a range of entities, for example individual, corporation, trust, body corporate and more. Each entity type has different requirements, so ensure the consent is signed in the way that is valid for the entity.

Application form

Complete the application for advertising device approvals online form including:

  • uploading your supporting documents
  • paying the application fee using a Visa or Mastercard.

Right to review

If you are given an approval that is subject to conditions, or your application is refused you may apply to Council for a review of the decision. The application for a review must be made within 20 working days from the day on which the decision notice is given to you.
