Disability parking permit

Disability parking permits are issued and maintained by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The information on this page applies to Australian Parking Scheme permit holders. For information on exemptions for red permit holders, visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Australian Disability Parking Scheme permit holders (both individual and organisation) in Queensland are entitled to park in:

  • any space provided for a person with a disability in an on-street or off-street parking location (e.g. some shopping centres and hospitals)
  • Brisbane City Council metered or regulated parking areas free of charge for the following periods where the time limit specified by a sign is:
    • less than 30 minutes, the permit holder is allowed to park for 30 minutes in Queensland
    • 30 minutes or more, the permit holder is allowed to park for an unlimited amount of time in Queensland.

However, you are not entitled to park in restricted parking zones (for example, clearways, no stopping, loading zones and bus zones). You can pick up or set down a passenger with a disability for five minutes in a passenger loading zone.

All permit holders should take care when parking in off-street parking stations, as free parking for Australian Disability Parking Scheme permit holders may not apply. Private car parks may charge their own fees. Users are advised to check the conditions of entry before parking in private car parks.

Council's off-street car parks at King George Square and Wickham Terrace provide dedicated bays for Australian Disability Parking Scheme permit holders that are charged at the same rate as other users.

If you are not the holder of an Australian Disability Parking Scheme permit, you must not park in any disability parking space. People with limited mobility need these spaces to easily get in and out of their vehicle and are located in areas that are easy to access.

Overseas and interstate permits

Valid overseas and interstate disability parking permits may be used in Queensland and are equivalent to the Australian permit, however the rules outlined on this page still apply.

Permit display

If you park in a disability parking bay without a permit clearly displayed, you may be fined. The expiry date and permit number must be clearly visible from the exterior of the vehicle.

When displaying your permit, it must be placed in a location where it can be easily seen, as shown in the following example, where the permit is displayed on the bottom of the front windscreen on the passenger side.

Brisbane Mobility Map

A new edition of Council’s Brisbane Mobility Map is now available. The map is a guide to Brisbane’s city centre for people with impaired mobility. It shows accessible infrastructure in the CBD and City Botanic Gardens, including features such as accessible toilets, seating, disability parking spots, taxi ranks, drop-off zones and accessible pathways.

The map is available in hard copy only. To obtain a copy, contact Council’s Access and Inclusion team by calling 07 3403 8888.

On-street disability parking spaces

This map includes Disability Parking Permit on-street parking in the Brisbane Central Business District. Alternatively, you can view with map in Council's Google Maps account.
