Development assessment overview
A development application is an application made for consent under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 to carry out development.
Development is defined in Section 7 of the Act as:
- carrying out building work
- carrying out plumbing or drainage work
- carrying out operational work
- reconfiguring a lot
- making a material change of use of premises
A development application is necessary to change the use of land, subdivide land, carry out building, landscaping and other work, unless what is proposed is self-assessable under Council’s planning scheme, City Plan 2000.
Types of development approval
The types of approval under the Act are:
- preliminary approval
- development permit
- compliance permit
- compliance certificate
