Parking meters
Parking meters can be found in many Brisbane streets. Parking spaces with time limits allow access to an area for as many people as possible.
Brisbane City Council also operates car parking stations at King George Square and Wickham Terrace.
Types of parking meters
There are two types of parking meters:
- single
- ticketless parking - records your registration details as a reference of your payment. There is no need to display a ticket on your vehicle
The meter's instructions show the times the meter is in use, the maximum parking time allowed and the coins to be used.
Some metered parking spaces in the central business district can change to clearways during peak hours. Always check the traffic signs.

Parking meter fees
New fee capping system
Meters that allow you to park for more than four hours in a parking area zone carry a fee cap. This maximum charge lets you park all day at a flat fee and is similar to what you find in some off-street parking stations.
| Parking area zone | Maximum charge |
|---|---|
| 1 | weekdays - $10 weekends - $6 |
| 2 | $8 |
| 3 | $5 |
For example, the hourly rate in zone 2 (for meters with an allowable parking time of more than four hours) is $1.50, therefore if you put:
- $3 into the meter, you get two hours of parking time
- $7.50 into the meter, you get five hours of parking time
- $8 into the meter, allows you to park for the maximum signed parking time (up to 12 hours)
Refer to the regulated parking fees table for more information.
You can download the regulated parking zone map (PDF - 672kb).
Payment options
With new ticketless meters, payment can be made by:
- coin - most denominations
- credit card - Visa and Mastercard are accepted for a minimum of one hour parking
- mobile phone payments
Always check the meter sign for payment options.
Meters and fines
You can be fined if you park in a metered space for longer than the permitted maximum time. Even if you put more money in the meter, you will need to move your car once the maximum time limit has expired.
You can also be given a fine for each successive period. For example, if you park at a two hour meter for over four hours, you may receive two infringement notices.
Faulty meters
If the parking meter won’t accept your money, or is not working and cannot show how long you have been parked in that space:
- Note the meter number and the parking bay number (if there is one).
- Phone Brisbane City Council as soon as possible on 07 3403 8888 to report the fault.
Motorcycle parking bays in the city
You can only park one motorcycle in any car parking space. The same rate as a normal vehicle applies.
Special motorcycle-only bays have lower fees.
To find the motorcycle-only parking bays, you can download the inner city motorcycle parking map (PDF - 201kb).
