2022 International Internship Program host businesses

Brisbane City Council is providing Brisbane-based businesses the opportunity to host domestic students from multicultural background and/or international university students from our Sister Cities in a subsidised four-week, paid internship program through the 2022 International Internship Program.

Applications for host businesses to participate in the 2022 International Internship Program have now closed.

Considerations for potential host businesses

Businesses wishing to participate in the 2022 International Internship Program (Internship Program) as a host business are to consider the following information when applying:

  • this is a valuable partially subsidised paid* Internship Program initiated by Brisbane City Council (*the salary for the intern placement will be based on a casual employment arrangement, approximate hourly rate of $35.93, plus casual loading). Council will subsidise 50% of the labour cost for the four-week placement, with the host business contributing 50% to the remainder of the student’s wage)
  • you must not use the intern to displace an existing employee or reduce an existing employee’s hours of work
  • you must not provide the intern with extra hours of paid work outside the hours of the internship
  • you will be required to ensure a qualified person conducts and records a risk assessment for each intern
  • you are not obligated to employ the intern upon completion of the Internship Program
  • your business interests, sector and needs will be taken into consideration during the process of matching the host business to an Internship Program participant
  • you are expected to ensure the intern has a positive experience during the process and period of the Internship Program by:
    • ensuring a representative is present for the internship interview and induction
    • ensuring that a supervisor is assigned to the intern for the entirety of the placement
    • ensuring that work is assigned to the intern and the intern is aware of the expected outcomes
    • communicating expectations from the beginning and providing continuous feedback
  • the internship must:
    • be for four weeks from 4-29 April 2022
    • be for a maximum of 20 hours per week
    • not exceed a maximum of seven hours per day
    • not include working on a public holiday.
