About the project
Council recognises that it is important to preserve and protect our natural assets now and for the future. Council recently held a competition to encourage designers to submit concepts for a fountain and water feature in two inner-city locations.
In 2015, Council completed work on three sites in Brisbane’s CBD to return decorative water features to operation that were decommissioned due to past droughts. This work was completed in December 2015 and included:
- E.E. McCormick Place fountain at 278 Upper Roma Street
- Emma Miller Place fountain at 109 Roma Street
- Mooney Memorial Fountain in Fountain Reserve at 118 Eagle Street.
Council understands that as our city grows and develops, our built environment will need to support natural area outcomes and provide green assets that support Brisbane’s liveability and lifestyle outcomes.
In November 2016, Council identified and confirmed a further water feature and fountain will be installed in the inner-city, using effective and sustainable practices, to deliver on Council’s commitment to maximise the community benefit of our green and open spaces. These include:
- King George Square Water Feature, Brisbane City
- Daphne Mayo Fountain, Brisbane River
The EOI for this project closed on 30 August 2017 after being open for four weeks. Following the detailed design process, construction contracts will be awarded in mid-2018, with the projects to be delivered in the 2018-19 financial year.
