Brisbane's Sister City - Daejeon
A Memorandum of Understanding between Brisbane and Daejeon was signed in Brisbane in March 2001. This relationship was formalised in Daejeon on 17 June 2002 with the signing of an official Sister City Agreement with strong emphasis on economic activities.
2022 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Brisbane – Daejeon Sister City relationship, which aims to foster relationship in the areas of:
- start-up and innovation
- research and development
- education and training
- renewable technologies
- food and beverage
- tourism
- culture.

About Daejeon
Daejeon:
- is the fifth largest city in South Korea with more than 1.45 million residents.
- is the capital of South Chungcheong Province.
- is one of the seven metropolitan cities in South Korea and its official name is Daejeon Metropolitan City.
- is home to South Korea’s largest technology Research and Development (R&D) precinct, Daedeok Innopolis, that was established in 1973. The precinct has more than 400 world-class public and private research institutes with over 20,000 researchers.
- 15% of the total national R&D investment is spent in Daejeon.
- is also a leading hub in the higher education sectors in South Korea and home to 19 universities.
- is one of South Korea’s administration hubs with the Daejeon Government Complex. Currently there are twelve national government offices including Korea Customs Service, Small and Medium Business Administration, Public Procurement Service, National Statistical Office and Korean Intellectual Property Office.
- hosted the Taejon World Expo ’93 in 1993.
- hosted the Asia Pacific Cities Summit (APCS) and Mayors’ Forum, Brisbane’s initiative, in 2017 and the Lord Mayor of Brisbane led a delegation of 120 Brisbane business, government and youth leaders to the event. enjoys a continental climate with an average annual temperature of 12 °C and an average rainfall of 1350 millimetres.
- is located in the centre of South Korea — 164 km from Seoul, 294 km from Busan and 169 km from Gwangju, serving as a hub of transportations for major rail and road routes.
- is also one of South Korea’s major television-production hubs.
