The Lord Mayor's Multicultural Business Scholarship Program and Mentoring Scheme offerings

The following programs were offered as a part of the 2017-18 Lord Mayor's Multicultural Business Scholarship and Mentoring Scheme. Applications are now closed.

Certificate IV in Small Business Management (BSB42515) - TAFE Queensland

This eight-week part-time program consists of a three hour workshop one night per week, with flexible course times. Five workshops will be run covering the following topics followed by one-on-one sessions with a mentor:

  • undertake small business plan
  • manage small business finances
  • design a digital action plan
  • refine/ strengthen small business
  • market the small business
  • address customer needs
  • develop/ use emotional intelligence.
  • time management for small business
  • originate and develop concepts
  • manage compliance small business.

Certificate IV in New Small Business (BSB42615) - TAFE Queensland

This 12-week part-time course runs two nights per week starting Tuesday 17 July 2018. The course runs a set class structure and enables students to: 

  • establish and comply with legal and risk requirements of small business
  • plan small business finances
  • market the small business
  • undertake small business planning
  • investigate micro business opportunities
  • profile the market
  • develop and use complex spreadsheets
  • analyse and present research information
  • review and maintain a website
  • establish networks.

Certificate IV in Business (with marketing specialisation) - Site Institute

This nine-month course runs a set class structure once a week on Tuesdays 9am to 3pm. The course covers a range of business skills that are required to be successful both as a high achieving employee and also those running their own small and growing business.

In this course participants will learn about:

  • innovation and creative problem solving
  • articulating and presenting ideas
  • business documentation
  • marketing
  • customer service
  • workplace health and safety.

Diploma of Leadership and Management - Site Institute

This 12-month course runs a set class structure once a week on Thursdays 9am to 3pm. The course covers the important skills required to lead, inspire and motivate teams in the modern workplace. Participants will learn systems, processes and techniques that will assist in leadership and management roles as they progress in their career

In this course participants will learn about:

  • emotional intelligence and innovative work environments
  • team effectiveness, workplace relations and professional development
  • effective time management
  • operational and administrative systems
  • continuous improvement
  • project management.

Master in Information Technology or Master in Business Administration - Federation University Australia

The following courses run for two years, full time. The scholarship covers one-year's tuition.

Master of Technology (Enterprise Systems and Business Analytics)

With a Master of Technology (Enterprise Systems and Business Analytics), you will gain a deep understanding of relevant topics and technology pertaining to Enterprise System (ES). T

This course is designed to prepare you to succeed in roles that use ES Technology to manage, integrate and expand business endeavours. Course include Technology (like ERP, SCM, and CRM), BPR, Big Data, Business analytics, Cloud computing, IS security, Project management, IT strategy and SAP, the world’s largest enterprise software.

The course will also include IBM Watson, cognitive technology that can think like a human to analyse and interpret data, as well as understanding personality, tone and emotion.

Master of Technology (Software Engineering)

Graduating with a Master of Technology (Software Engineering) means you will be armed with the specialist knowledge required to both understand and implement advanced software engineering techniques. You will be able to design, implement and maintain IT systems. In addition, you will be able to create high quality software. Employment options will open up in many industries, including security and defence, education, aerospace, health, business and finance.

Master of Business Administration (Health Services Management)

Become a leader in the health industry and study a Master of Business Administration (Health Services Management). You will develop the skills and specialist knowledge to manage a variety of issues as they relate to the health care sector, including leadership, policy, practice and evidence-based delivery. If you are currently working in the sector or aspiring to a management position, or have a non-health background with interest in the healthcare industry, this is the degree for you.

Diploma of Beauty Therapy - Brisbane School of Hairdressing and Beauty

The 12-month Diploma of Beauty SHB50115 is the Australian qualification for those wishing to work as a beauty therapist in a beauty clinic, spa or even start their own business. The course starts in July 2018 and runs a set class structure that is delivered on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am to 5pm.

Students are taught the skills and knowledge to provide beauty therapy treatments and services including facial treatments, body massage and treatments, hair removal, lash and brow treatments, nail and make-up services. This includes consultation with clients to provide beauty advice, recommend beauty treatments and services, and sell retail skin-care and cosmetic products.

Graduates will have a thorough understanding of the beauty industry.

Non-certificate Lord Mayor's Multicultural Business Mentoring Scheme

The Multicultural Round Table Mentoring Scheme is administered by members of the Lord Mayor's Multicultural Round Table and the workshops are conducted in small groups. The workshops commence in July 2018.

Mentors are available in between scheduled workshops for consultation via email or phone. The mentors are successful Brisbane businesspeople who volunteer their time to help budding entrepreneurs to grow their businesses.

In order to apply for the mentoring program, business must have been established for at least 12 months. Previous recipients of the scholarship program are encouraged to apply.

Separate guest speaker workshops are also organised throughout the year. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland also supports the program by providing one-year membership to successful applicants.
