Intelligent congestion busting

Brisbane City Council is committed to building smoother streets and taking real action on tackling traffic congestion with 90 congestion-busting suburban road projects. Council uses intelligent transport systems to monitor traffic volumes, average speeds and real-time corridor performance to help residents get home quicker and safer with more travel options.

Brisbane was the first city in Australia to implement a functional, large-scale Bluetooth monitoring system. This capability means Council monitors our road network in real time and can respond quickly to incidents and congestion.

Bluetooth data is captured at more than 900 locations, which informs travel speeds and journey times, to provide continuous improvement of reducing the impact of congestion on our residents. An extensive network of Variable Message Signs means Council, and other agencies, can share important information with travellers in real time.

Council is continuously trialling new transport technologies and investigating new ways of using our traffic data to take real action on congestion.
