Bus operator training requirements
Transport for Brisbane is committed to training and developing its workforce to become capable, confident and customer focused in their role. An induction course is designed for all new bus operators.
The induction course is a combination of paid classroom and on-the-job training. The classroom component is run at our training school at Willawong Depot. It is facilitated by our certified in-house trainers. This training course consists of competency based training and assessment. Successful completion of the course requires completion of units that relate to the job role as defined by Transport for Brisbane and Brisbane City Council.
It will take approximately six to eight weeks to become a Council bus operator. Both trainee and casual operators need to be available full-time during this period. This applies even if you are applying for casual employment. Training is between 5am-4pm, Monday to Friday (rosters released weekly).
An overview of topics covered within the induction course are:
- licence training (if you do not hold a current Heavy Rigid (HR) licence)*
- bus familiarisation
- Brisbane City Council and Transport for Brisbane Safety policies and procedures
- customer service
- job specific training such as electronic ticketing.
* Within the training provided, successful achievement of your licence is a fundamental requirement for your role.
After successful completion of the classroom component of the induction course, you will complete depot specific on-the-job training. As part of this training you will undergo small group route training for your depot followed by one-on-one mentor (buddy) driving.
Upon successful completion of the induction course, you will be a capable, competent and confident Council bus operator.
There is an opportunity within Transport for Brisbane to gain a formal qualification in Certificate III in Driving Operations (TLI31216). This qualification is for driving operation roles within the Transport and Logistics Industry. It is facilitated by an external Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The training consists of both practical and theory based sessions. Successful completion of the qualification requires competence in the units of competency relating to the job role requirements defined as aligned at AQF Level 3.
