10 new activities for the kids to try these school holidays

School's out for 2021 and there are plenty of new school holiday activities to keep the kids entertained all summer long. From Christmas craft to perfecting paper plans, a family-friendly dance party to animating clay, we've rounded up the top 10 new picks and they're all here in Brisbane's backyard.

1. Rockin' around the Christmas tree

Let the Christmas spirit ring and have young people 10-17 years old make their own wooden Christmas trees. Using timber off-cuts and hand tools, imaginations will spark with this festive-fun project. Held across two locations - Ken Fletcher Park, Tennyson on 13 December at 3pm and 4pm, and Sherwood Arboretum on 15 December at 10am - the sessions are $5 and covered footwear must be worn. 2. Abseiling the Kangaroo Point Cliffs

Come and conquer your fears on 16 December at 8am and 10am and experience the thrills of abseiling at Kangaroo Point under the safe instruction of qualified instructors. This is a Chillout event suitable for 12-17 years of age. Wear enclosed shoes, exercise wear and bring some drinking water. Bookings essential. Book online or phone 0492 982 454.

3. Take flight

Level up their paper plane-making skills at the free flying origami Chillout event for young people aged 6-12. New and innovative folding techniques will be shared to take paper planes to new heights and let them fly faster than ever before. Hosted at Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre, the aspiring aviators can test their planes out across the park. Sign up for 14 December at 10am. Bookings essential. 4. A life on stilts

Give the natural jester in your home the chance to shine. In this outdoor activity, young people aged 6-12 years will make their own juggling balls and wooden stilts before they test their agility as they learn to juggle and walk on stilts. Held on 6 January at D. M. Henderson Park, Macgregor, at 10am and 11am, these Chillout sessions are $5 per person and bookings are essential. Book online or phone 0435 110 866.

5. It's party time

Rascals, radicals and ratbags get ready to join Babushka's first family-friendly show, Right to Party, as part of the Lord Mayor's Children's Program. Grown-ups and their 3-10 year olds are invited to join Alicia, Laura and Judy as they take a riotous journey through history's most rebellious turns from Pink and Queen to Bjork and The Ramones. Bookings to sing killer tunes with this feisty trio are essential for the 8 and 9 January performances at 10am and 1pm. Book online.

6. Create the next soccer star

If your home has a budding Socceroo or Matilda, this free holiday activity will give them a kick-start. For young people from 12-17 years, they'll be guided through an active introduction to soccer by Quest Football Academy Sessions run on 8 and 15 January at 3pm (12-14 years) and 4pm (15-17 years) at Fenwick Park, Mitchelton. 7. Floral fancies

Create flowers and foliage memories to last a lifetime in this Chillout event that gives kids the chance to decorate and assemble their own wooden flower press. With their press, they'll be able to collect flowers, leaves and foliage from nature to press and keep forever. There are two sessions being held in Orleigh Park, West End on 14 January (for 6-12 year olds) at 9.30am and 10.30am or 17 January (for 10-17 year old) at 10am and 11am. Cost is $5 per session and bookings are essential. Book online or phone 0435 110 866.

8. Animation clay creations

Young makers from 10-17 years can flex their creative spirit to create their own clay characters and see them come to life using the latest animation software at the Cannon Hill Community Centre. Learn the tricks of the trade at this event suitable for seniors and young people. The 18 January sessions are being held at 10am (for seniors and children) and 1pm (for 10-17 year olds) and are $5 per session.  Bookings essential. Book online or phone 0411 246 487.

9. Blast off on a space adventure

Join the team at Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium for a mission of discovery in the Cosmic Skydome. The immersive 50-minute shows are suitable for ages 6 years and above, with a special 35-minute morning session perfect for budding astronomers 3-6 years old. Every show is a new and different adventure! Ticket prices start at $6 for children (3-14 years) and $10 for adults for 35-minute shows. Book online.

10. Choose your own adventure

Free craft makerspaces to Christmas storytime (multiple locations), a paper cup rocket launcher challenge (4 January at 11am at Bracken Ridge Library) to a great paper plane race (17 January at 2pm for 5-12 year olds at Annerley Library), there's plenty of new and exciting adventures to be discovered at our libraries for all ages.
