Do you know an individual, community group, school or business working hard to keep our city clean and green? Nominate them for the WasteSMART Brisbane Awards and help them get the recognition they deserve.
Brisbane City Council has partnered with Brisbane Sustainability Agency to deliver the awards, which celebrate the achievements of residents who go above and beyond for our environment by undertaking waste smart activities and practices.
The awards were introduced in 2020 to align with Council’s Waste Smart strategy for the city. Last year’s winners included local resident Manny Findlay, who took out the People’s Choice WasteSMART Award. Manny has become a local legend in his community by actively cleaning his local parks and advocating to keep his suburb clean through recycling and litter prevention. He does community announcements with his local Councillor, offers a wheelie bin cleaning service, and has been featured on Channel 7 News.
But individuals weren’t the only ones who were recognised. OzHarvest Brisbane and eWaste Connection tied for the WasteSMART Community Award. OzHarvest rescues surplus food that would otherwise go to waste from commercial businesses and delivers that food at no cost to charities feeding vulnerable Australians. While eWaste Connection operate an electrical waste recycling centre. As a community resource they offer valuable work experience for individuals with a disability or disadvantaged background, and volunteering opportunities for people in Brisbane’s western suburbs. They also offer the community a convenient drop off location for unwanted e-waste.
The 2021 WasteSMART Brisbane Awards comprise of eight award categories and 11 awards, with a prize pool worth over $4,000. The finalists are judged by a panel, except the People's Choice WasteSMART Award which is voted on by the public.
Nominations are now open and will run to 3 September 2021. Public voting for this award will run from 4-15 October 2021.
