Larger recycling bin

By recycling cardboard, glass, firm plastics and metal, it can be easy to have a full recycling bin each fortnight. You can swap to a larger recycling bin to make recycling easier for your home.

Brisbane City Council has waived the $30 establishment fee when you order a larger recycling bin to replace your existing 240-litre recycling bin.

Tenants, owner-occupiers and property investors are all eligible to order a larger recycling bin.

If you have previously ordered a larger recycling bin, you are not able to order a second larger recycling bin for your home.

The larger recycling bins:

  • aim to increase recycling and reduce waste sent to landfill
  • are ideal for households of more than three people
  • are ideal for residents who have an overflowing recycling bin every collection day
  • are ergonomically designed for easy use
  • are 1100 millimetres high, 680 millimetres wide and 870 millimetres deep
  • provide residents with the capacity to recycle additional material.

Ordering a larger recycling bin

Before you order a larger recycling bin, ensure you have enough space:

  • to store the bin
  • on the kerbside to put the bin out for collection.

You can use the bin as soon as it is delivered. Once ordered, leave your 240-litre recycling bin out as if for collection and it will be swapped with your new larger recycling bin.

Unit complexes

Unit and apartment blocks can request a larger bin or bulk recycling bins. Approval is subject to a Council site inspection based on:

  • availability of storage
  • kerb presentation space
  • accessibility for service vehicles, if required.

Body corporates

If your unit complex has a body corporate, they must approve and order the larger recycling bin on behalf of unit property owners or tenants. Body corporates can order larger recycling bins online.

Larger recycling bin delivery

Once you have lodged your request for a larger recycling bin, your order will be processed for delivery and you will be advised about delivery arrangements.

While waiting for delivery of your larger recycling bin, place your existing recycling bin on the kerbside for replacement. You can continue to use your bin until the larger replacement bin arrives, but do not fill it to more than 50% capacity. Any recycling bin contents will be transferred to the new bin on delivery and emptied on the next standard day of service.

Let other members of your household and your neighbours know that you are replacing your existing recycling bin and it needs to remain on the kerbside until Council delivers the new bin and removes the existing bin.
