NAIDOC Week celebrations

Brisbane City Council acknowledges the importance of NAIDOC Week to Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples and supports a variety of events held throughout the city. NAIDOC Week is usually celebrated in the first full week of July each year. NAIDOC stands for the National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Observance Committee.

NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. It also recognises and celebrates  the history and cultures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and is an opportunity to recognise the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community’s contributions to Brisbane City.

NAIDOC Week was held 2-9 July 2023 honouring this year’s theme of For Our Elders.

Brisbane was also the Host City for the 2023 National NAIDOC Week Awards Ceremony, held Saturday July 1 at the Brisbane Convention Centre. This was National NAIDOC Week’s premiere event showcasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence honouring outstanding achievements and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in their communities and beyond.
