Lost and found animals

Brisbane City Council maintains a register for lost and found animals in Brisbane.

To search for your pet you can:

Report a lost pet

If you have lost your pet, contact Council and provide:

  • your name and contact details
  • your pet’s name
  • your pet’s registration number
  • a description of your pet
  • where and when you last saw your pet
  • your pet's microchip number (if applicable)

Sometimes animals can appear different in a photo to what they actually look like. If you cannot locate your pet or livestock via the website, you can visit the two animal rehoming centres.

Council holds registered and unregistered animals, except livestock, for five days. If unclaimed, the animal may be adopted or euthanased.

Unclaimed livestock may be sold through an expression of interest process.

Report a found pet

If you have found someone’s pet or livestock, contact Council and provide:

  • your name and contact details
  • the registration tag number (if available)
  • a description of the animal
  • where and when you found the animal
  • the microchip tag number (if available)

Claim your animal from a Council animal rehoming centre

Council impounds stray animals in the animal rehoming centre for a minimum of five working days. You will need to pay an animal release fee for your impounded animal.

Contact the animal rehoming centre and quote the Animal ID number on the animal details screen to claim your animal.

You will need identification to collect the animal. Council will not enter into any dispute over ownership of the animal should more than one person claim to be the owner.

When you collect your animal from the animal rehoming centre, you:

  • will need to pay fees to cover the time your animal spent in the rehoming centre
  • will need to register your dog (if not already registered)
  • may receive an infringement notice if the animal was in breach of Council's local laws.
