Pre-planning a funeral

Planning a funeral in advance can relieve family and friends of the burden of planning and financing arrangements at a stressful and emotional time. It also enables clear instructions to ensure your wishes are carried out.

Brisbane City Council has three crematoria and nine cemeteries with available burial plots

Pre-purchasing a burial site, cremation or ashes memorial with Council ensures that you pay at today's current prices with no further costs to the cemetery.

You can make part-payments on a pre-purchased cemetery site online.

Pre-planning for a burial

The following should be carried out and considered when pre-planning for a burial at a Council cemetery:

  1. Contact the cemetery to arrange an appointment to pay for interment in an already pre-purchased family grave or to view available burial plots, to help you choose the type and location of the grave. Please note, lawn beam graves are allocated by the next available grave for operational purposes, however we still recommend arranging an appointment for a Council officer to show you the lawn beam grave that will be allocated to you and to complete paperwork.
  2. Consider where the service will be held: a private church, chapel in the cemetery grounds (available at Pinnaroo, Hemmant and Mount Gravatt cemeteries) or at the graveside. Chapel services can be pre-purchased with your burial plot.
  3. Some arrangements can only be made with a Funeral Director, such as arranging a coffin, flowers, funeral notifications, legislative paperwork and transport. Contact a Funeral Director to make these arrangements and notify them of the cemetery and grave location you have pre-purchased.
  4. Update your will with information about your funeral arrangements so your executor has clear instructions of your wishes. Ensure your next of kin or carer knows where your private papers are kept.

Pre-planning for a cremation

The following should be carried out and considered when pre-planning for a cremation at a Council crematorium:

  1. Contact Pinnaroo, Hemmant or Mount Gravatt crematoria to arrange an appointment to pre-purchase your cremation.
  2. Consider where the service will be held: a private church or in the chapel on the cemetery grounds. Chapel services at Council crematoria can be pre-purchased with your cremation deed.
  3. Consider where you ashes will be laid to rest. Options include:
    • memorial wall or garden site in a Council cemetery
    • interment in a family grave
    • a memorial urn for your family to keep
    • scattering at a favourite or meaningful location (ask for advice from the Council officer during your appointment about whether the location is allowed and how to obtain permission)

Memorial sites and interment in grave fees can be paid in advance with your cremation deed. Memorial urns may also be pre-purchased and taken in advance.

  4. Some arrangements can only be made with a Funeral Director, such as arranging a coffin, flowers, funeral notifications, legislative paperwork and transport. Contact a Funeral Director to make these arrangements and notify them of the services you have pre-purchased with Council.
  5. Update your will with information about your funeral arrangements so your executor has clear instructions of your wishes. Ensure your next of kin or carer knows where your private papers are kept.
