Brisbane City Council wants all young people to experience Brisbane as a city that supports their well-being and helps them enjoy active and healthy lifestyles.

Our active, healthy city is one of eight themes in the Youth Strategy 2014-2019: Delivering a youth-friendly city.

The other seven themes are - vibrant and creative, smart and prosperous, accessible and connected, friendly and safe, clean and green, well-designed and subtropical, and New World City

Key facts and findings 

The following trends and issues affect Brisbane young people:

  • suicide is the leading cause of death for young people
  • body image dissatisfaction affects 75% of young women and 66% of young men
  • financial and other barriers affect participation in sport and recreation

Our active and healthy strategies for young people

As a Council, we want young people in Brisbane to:

  • stay healthy, be resilient, and to connect with people who care about their well-being
  • enjoy social, sporting and recreational activities in Brisbane

To achieve these outcomes, our active and healthy strategies for young people over the next five years include:

  • support youth-led initiatives to improve health and well-being
  • involve young people in planning our activities
  • build resilience and strengthen support networks
