""

Brisbane City Council wants all young people to experience Brisbane as a city with safe, inclusive, caring, connected and engaged communities.

Our friendly, safe city is one of eight themes in the Youth Strategy 2014-2019: Delivering a youth-friendly city.

The other seven themes of the strategy are - active and healthy, vibrant and creative, smart and prosperous, accessible and connected, clean and green, well-designed and subtropical, and New World City.

Key facts and findings

The following trends and issues affect Brisbane young people:

  • cultural diversity is a significant part of the life experience of young people in Brisbane
  • Brisbane's outer southern growth corridors have high numbers of children and young people growing up in new housing estates and infill developments
  • Brisbane has vulnerable young people who find daily life a struggle
  • incidents of violence are common enough that young people out at night need to be alert and take care

Our friendly and safe strategies for young people

As a Council, we want:

  • Brisbane to be youth-friendly and welcoming to all
  • young people in need in Brisbane to be able to get the help and support they need to change their circumstances
  • young people in Brisbane to be actively involved in their communities and to feel safe
  • young people in Brisbane to build relationships across cultures to create harmony and understanding

To achieve these outcomes, our friendly and safe strategies for young people over the next five years include:

  • support youth and community organisations and networks to respond to disadvantage and emerging need
  • work with young people in Brisbane's culturally diverse growth corridors to develop identity, pride in place and intercultural harmony
  • design and animate public spaces in ways that celebrate young people, diversity and enhance safety and community cohesion
  • support initiatives or young social entrepreneurs that challenge prejudice and build respectful relationships
