The Green Heart Schools Student Environmental Network (SELN) proudly works with students and schools to empower young leaders to create change in their school community.

Lord Mayor’s Green Heart Photography Competition

This year's competition challenges Brisbane residents to capture creative, emotive and inspiring images of our natural environment. The theme is ‘Colours of Brisbane’ through an environmental lens. There are two categories this year – primary age group and secondary age group.

Free Native Plants Program

Council offers the Free Native Plants Program to residents, schools, clubs, body corporates and registered community groups to plant within their grounds. 

Lessons in the gardens

Many outdoor learning lessons are available for school students at Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha and City Botanic Gardens. Find out more about booking a lesson. 

Active School Travel program

Council’s Active School Travel program is a behaviour-change program designed to educate and motivate students, parents and teachers to leave the car at home and actively travel to and from school. Schools can apply now to be part of the 2019 program.

School recycling

Council offers education programs, including the new Waste Smart Kindy program, recycling bins, recycling support and teacher resources to help schools implement waste minimisation practices.

Green Heart Teacher Professional Development Day

In June 2017, Council was proud to welcome 100 local teachers and educators to the Teacher Professional Development Day.

Environment Centres' School Learning Program

Council's Environment Centres offer an Australian Curriculum integrated Environmental Learning Program designed for Prep to Year 12 school students.
