Reusable Cup Campaign | Brisbane City Council

Reusable Cup Campaign

Brisbane City Council is supporting the community to avoid single-use takeway cups. By adopting simple behaviour changes, we can keep Brisbane clean, green and sustainable.

Council commenced the Reusable Cup Campaign in May 2018 by asking Brisbane coffee drinkers to join the movement and use a reusable coffee mug.

Be a reuse hero and share your moment on social media. Use hashtags #reusebne and #BrisbaneCityCouncil for a chance to feature on city billboards. Council will seek permission to use all images.

While Council accepts takeaway cups in recycling bins, we recognise this waste is a growing issue. Council's 2017 waste survey indicated we throw away approximately 156 million single-use coffee cups in Brisbane each year. We all need to work towards more sustainable behaviours to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Taking your reusable coffee cup to local cafes helps support a clean and green Brisbane.

Our Reusable Cup Campaign cafes

Council recruited over 100 Brisbane cafes to participate in the Business Recycling Challenge. Cafes received 20 reusable 'keep cup' coffee cups to gift to their loyal customers. Those customers received a loyalty card to stamp when they used their reusable cup. The tenth visit earned them a free coffee.

Responsible Cafes

Brisbane cafes can join the responsible cafe movement. Cafes are provided with tools and a platform to show they are reducing waste and saving money. For more information, visit Responsible Cafes.
