Recycling Art Competition 2017

The Salvage Recycling Art Competition is back in 2017.

This competition explores the creative potential in reusing and recycling household items and furniture and aims to inspire people to see the reuse possibilities of items that may have otherwise have been thrown away.

This initiative was developed in 2012 to raise awareness of Council's tip shops at Acacia Ridge and Geebung and keep reusable furniture and household items out of landfill. The tip shops are operated by the Endeavour Foundation, which is a non-government organisation that provides support and opportunities for people with a disability.

Artworks

A high calibre of Brisbane artists submitted expressions of interest to participate in the 2017 competition resulting in nine Brisbane-based artists being selected to create artworks. Read the artist profiles.

The artists create artworks from furniture and other household items sourced from Council's tip shops and/or from other second-hand centres around Brisbane.

Competition artists have 16 weeks to create their artwork and may modify, add to, or remove elements from recycled pieces during the creative process. Artworks must demonstrate the competition purpose, 'the creative recycling of second-hand household furniture and items'. If newly purchased materials are used, they must form only a minor part of the artwork.

Each competition artist receives a voucher to the value of $100 to be used at a Council's tip shop for the sole purpose of purchasing materials for the competition. Additional funding to the value of $200 is also available to each competition artist to cover the cost of other materials.

Professional photographs of the final artworks will be displayed for public voting and digital copies provided to competition artists for their portfolios.
