Installation works underway.

Sunday works during September and October.

About the project

Council is installing public safety devices in key locations around the city to improve separation between the roadway and pedestrians in the city centre. These works will be undertaken in King George Square intermittently from early June 2018 until mid-2019.

Installation works will take place between 7pm and 5am, Monday to Thursday, weather permitting.

Council has identified efficiencies in the construction schedule that will allow the projects to continue to work around events in the square by including Sunday works between 7pm and 5am during September and October 2018.

Installation works will need to occur at night when vehicle and pedestrian traffic movements are low and to ensure the safety of workers and the public.

Council will endeavour to complete noisier construction activities such as jack-hammering and saw-cutting before 11pm.

Council is committed to keeping the local community informed of construction activity in their area and will provide further advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption such as particularly noisy works or out-of-hours activities.

Council is currently working through an engineering solution for these devices to be installed above the bus tunnel that runs underneath Adelaide Street into the King George Square station. As such, the existing concrete devices will remain in place along the Adelaide Street entrance to the square until an appropriate solution is finalised.

Council will provide further information to the community about other locations as information becomes available.

Impacts during construction

We apologise in advance for any disruption caused and thank you for your patience while we complete this work.

Residents and businesses in close proximity to the works may experience the following:

  • noise and some dust generated from the installation activities. Please be assured that Council will use environmental controls and make every effort to minimise disruptions during these works.
  • some localised pedestrian restrictions, which will be managed through on-site traffic controllers. Access for authorised vehicles will also be maintained during the works.

Access will be maintained through King George Square, and to City Hall, local businesses, public transport and events throughout construction. The construction schedule for installation of the devices will work around events in King George Square to minimise impact to the community.
