Darra BMX facility
Brisbane City Council is pleased to advise that construction for the Darra BMX facility is anticipated to start in late September, with completion expected in mid-2019. This new facility is part of Council’s commitment to creating new lifestyle and leisure opportunities and delivering vibrant, liveable communities.
The Lord Mayor’s 2016-17 Budget speech included a commitment of $2.3 million towards the construction of two new high quality BMX tracks in Brisbane. A review of suitable sites across Brisbane identified Monier Road Park, Darra as a preferred location to capitalise on existing infrastructure and best service Brisbane’s south-western suburbs.
|Address||Monier Road Park, 52 Monier Road, Darra|
|Project outcome||New recreational BMX facility|
Construction is expected to start late September 2018 and due for completion in mid-2019, weather and site conditions permitting.
About the project
The new BMX facility will cater for all users ranging from young children and beginners to professional riders. It will include freestyle jumps for more advanced riders and tracks for recreational riding. The facility will be free to use and will be built close to the existing playground at Monier Road Park. The Darra site will integrate with fields and other park facilities.
Council has engaged a specialist design team with BMX experience to design the facility and following community consultation, the final detailed concept design was released in mid-August 2018.
Once construction is complete, access and existing parking at the BMX facility will remain as it currently is, via Monier Road.
Prior to construction of the BMX facility, Council completed remediation works to the north-eastern section of the former landfill site at Monier Road Park. Minimal vegetation removal works were required which is part of Council’s commitment to providing a sustainable solution to an increasing community demand for a greater range of recreational activities.
Construction works in the north-eastern section of Monier Road Park will involve:
- installing an asphalt BMX track with entry level, intermediate and advanced runs
- landscaping including trees, groundcovers and turf
- installing drainage, a new shade shelter, drinking fountain and signage
- reinstating a grassed public open space area for community use.
Construction will take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, weather and site conditions permitting. Residents and businesses will be notified if any out-of-hours works are required. During construction, local residents and businesses in close proximity to the site may experience an increase in noise and dust as part of these works. Council is committed to minimising impacts to the community wherever possible and appreciates the community’s patience during these works.
The north-eastern section of Monier Road Park will be fenced off for the duration of works and closed to the public until Council has completed all required safety and remedial works in the area. However, the playground and the open space to the west of the park will remain open.
