Dog registration renewal

Dog registrations are valid for 12 months and must be renewed each year. You can update and renew the details of your dog's registration online or use other payment options. Brisbane City Council residents with an existing dog registration can also:

Payment options

When paying a dog registration renewal, you must quote the reference number on your current renewal notice. Using a reference number from a previous year will not renew the registration. You can use your credit card for:

  • online payments (except for overdue accounts) using the animal reference number (including the letters 'AN' followed by 11 digits). This reference number is different to the tag number and the reference number on the renewal notice
  • phone pay. Use your Visa or MasterCard. Phone 1300 309 311 and follow the prompts
  • BPAY. You need to set up BPAY with your financial institution before you can use it.

Alternatively, you can renew your dog's registration by cash, credit card, cheque or EFTPOS:

Note: you must pay the full amount. Council does not accept part payments.

Overdue renewals

You can pay an overdue dog registration renewal by BPAY or phone pay up to two months after the expiry date. If your account is overdue for more than two months, you will need to contact Council to arrange payment.

The registration will be valid from the original renewal date regardless of when you pay the account.

Update desexing details

You have three options for updating the desexing details of your dog:

  1. Update your pet's details online.
  2. Phone Council on 07 3403 8888. You may require the vet's details and date of procedure.
  3. Submit a signed letter or dog registration application form to update the registration details. Download a hard copy of the dog registration application form.

If Council has already issued a renewal notice, you will be sent a new one with updated information.

The form or letter should include the vet's name and the date of desexing.

If you visit a Regional Business Centre, Council will create a new renewal notice at the time. Payment will be required immediately.

You must wait to receive your new renewal notice to make payment if:

  • you submit a letter or form at an animal rehoming centre, or
  • phone Council.

The Queensland Government requires your dog be microchipped, if you are selling or giving away your dog to a new owner within the Brisbane City Council area.

You must transfer registration providing details of the dog and the new owner's name and address. You can:

Registration tag replacement

From mid-December, Council will offer a choice between the type of tag worn by a dog. A range of metal tags (in black, blue and pink) will be available for dog owners to purchase for a small additional fee. These metal tags are engraved on both sides and include Council's logo, the dog's registration number, dog's name and the owner's contact phone number. More information will be available closer to date.

If your dog registration is current, Council will replace the registration tag free of charge if it is:

  • lost
  • damaged
  • illegible
  • faded, or
  • faulty.

If you have received the renewal notice, you must pay the renewal fee before requesting a replacement tag.

To request a replacement tag for your dog, complete a replacement tag application form online.

Alternatively, you can apply by completing the hard copy form.

Council will post a replacement tag within 10 working days.

Registration refunds

A refund of 50% of the registration fee will apply if your dog is deceased within the first six months of registering.

Council must receive the refund application within 12 months of the registration renewal date.

If the registration payment receipt is for a property outside of the Brisbane area, a 100% refund is applicable. Make your request in writing, enclose any relevant proof and post it to:
