Advertising signs tool | Brisbane City Council

Advertising signs tool

Use this interactive tool to find if your proposed sign needs Brisbane City Council approval.

Step 1

Find out the facts about the proposed sign location (zoning, constraints and locality issues).

Step 2

From the drop down in the Advertising signs tool, select the zone (area classification) your property is in.

Step 3

Select the Find signs environment button. This will take you to the relevant city environment. For advertising signs, property zonings are grouped into five city environments:

  1. city centre
  2. business centres
  3. industry
  4. residential
  5. greenspace.

You will then see the signs that are:

  • permitted – if your proposed sign meets the conditions that apply to all types of signs and the special conditions listed in the tool, you do not need anything in writing from Council to display a permitted sign
  • require approval – you will need to apply for council approval for these sign types, and the tool will indicate whether the approval required is express assessment or full assessment
  • generally inappropriate – you can still apply for a full assessment for these types of signs, however the term generally inappropriate provides a very rough initial guide only of the prospects for approval, new sign types can be applied for as generally inappropriate
  • prohibited – you must not display these signs and cannot apply for council to assess these types of signs.

In the community facilities zone, emerging community zone, special purpose zone or specialised centre zone in City Plan, Council may, at its discretion, classify the advertisement as if it were to be exhibited in the city environment most closely resembling the characteristics of the existing or proposed development on that property.

In a residential or green space environment, where the use is an existing lawful use within the meaning of the Planning Act, Council may, at its discretion, classify the advertisement as if it were to be exhibited in the city environment most closely resembling the characteristics of development of a similar nature and scale.
