Liquor licence proposals

If you are intending to apply to the Queensland Government for a long term liquor licence, you must first apply to Council to investigate the proposal and provide written advice to support the application. Council consent is also required for temporary liquor licence applications for events or other activities on Council land. Use this page to find out about the Council process for long term and temporary liquor licences.

Long term liquor licence

Applicants to the Queensland Government – Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) for a long term liquor licence will first need to obtain written advice from Council as to whether the use of the premises, which is associated with the proposed liquor licence, complies with the planning scheme. The Council process takes 10 working days. Obtaining this written advice will assist the Queensland Government with their assessment and decision-making processes.

To request this written advice:

  1. complete the Investigation into liquor licence request online form
  2. upload your supporting documents, which include:
    • the intended liquor licence type
    • the existing and proposed use of the premises
    • the existing and proposed operating hours
    • a simple site plan of the premises including detail of the licence area.
  3. submit your application. Note: once your application is submitted and reviewed by Council, you will be invoiced for the relevant fee as set out in the annual Development Assessment Fee Schedule. The applicable fee is listed under ‘Pre-lodgement services’ in the Fee Schedule as a ‘Request for written information on development-related matters’. Note: you do not need to complete a Brisbane City Council fee assessment form with your application.

Temporary liquor licence

Applicants to the Queensland Government for a Temporary Liquor Licence Application for an event or other activity on Council land (e.g. park, footpath, road) need to apply for Council’s consent. The Council process takes five working days.

There is no fee for this application, and you can apply using the application for event approvals online form.
