About the project

The Shorncliffe Escarpment is a significant feature of Bramble Bay. Over recent years, the condition of the escarpment has declined, with erosion, bank destabilisation and poor vegetation health contributing to the deterioration.

To manage the health of the site and safety of visitors into the future, Council developed a management plan for the Shorncliffe Escarpment to nurture and protect this high-profile natural landscape feature. Read more about the Shorncliffe Escarpment Management Plan (SEMP)

Priority works approach

The Shorncliffe Escarpment was impacted by the extreme weather event in February 2022, resulting in multiple landslips, collapse of staircases and footpaths and further damage to the upper and lower section of the escarpment. This created an increased risk to the natural environment and visitors.

Council undertook technical investigations following the February weather event to determine the impact on the escarpment. These investigations indicated heightened risk to several areas of the escarpment and priority works have now been undertaken to rectify the issues in these areas.

Priority works were undertaken in the following locations:

  • Eagle Terrace precinct
  • Cliff Street Park precinct
  • Frank Doyle Park precinct.

Works started in January 2023 and were completed in July 2023. The lawn area will remain fenced for a temporary period to allow the turf to establish.

Creating new parks, and enhancing and maintaining existing parks, is just another way Council is growing your Brisbane lifestyle to help you enjoy Brisbane's climate and connect with family and friends in the places that make our city great.

This project was jointly funded by Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government.
