Priority project: Edward Street

Edward Street is establishing itself as Brisbane’s home for high-quality retail and dining. We will support this investment by transforming it into a world-class retail environment with broad footpaths, tree-lined streets and beautiful buildings. Walking the length of this street will allow people to experience Brisbane’s dramatic topography, framing views from Spring Hill to Kangaroo Point.

Delivery of this project will include:

  • developing an overall vision for the street
  • staged design and upgrade of the street environment
  • partnering with stakeholders and the community

Edward Street Vision

Edward Street’s transformation into a world-class retail precinct and tree-lined boulevard is a priority project included in the City Centre Master Plan. The Edward Street Vision is one of the first steps to delivering the Edward Street priority project.

The vision incorporates the length of the street between Turbot and Alice streets and outlines a series of transformative changes including widened footpaths, engaging public spaces, creative lighting and other place-making initiatives.

Vision summary

The Edward Street Vision identifies three precincts to support a design that reflects the underlying function and character along the street.

These precincts include the High-end Retail Core, Spring Hill gateway and botanic gardens gateway.

Edward Street upgrade

Delivering on the Edward Street Vision has already commenced. Council’s 2015-16 budget allocated $11.4 million over three years towards transforming the section of the street between Queen and Charlotte streets into a prime shopping precinct.

Community engagement

The Edward Street priority project emerged during consultation on the City Centre Master Plan, including the Ideas Fiesta in April and May 2013. Feedback received from the community during the Ideas Fiesta has helped shape the vision document.

The vision has also been developed with input from the business community, industry experts and the Edward Street traders and property owners group.
