Biota Street Inala Village Precinct Project

Brisbane City Council has worked with the local community to refresh the neighbourhood shopping precinct on Biota Street, Inala as part of the Village Precinct Projects program.

Council is committing $500,000 to the improvement project, which aims to:

  • enhance the amenity, connectivity and safety for locals and residents
  • contribute to and encourage local economic development
  • provide a sense of place for the community at this neighbourhood centre.

This is part of Council’s commitment to creating a city of neighbourhoods, a key principle of the recently released Brisbane’s Future Blueprint, with vibrant suburban centres drawing people into the hub of their suburb, close to the services they need and the lifestyle and leisure options they want.

Community consultation and engagement

We received great feedback through the online survey and in person at the two information kiosks on Friday 14 December 2018 at the Christmas Carols at DJ Sherrington Park and on Saturday 15 December outside 119 Biota Street, Inala. You told us what is important to you in your neighbourhood. This feedback has informed Council in preparing the revitalisation plan for the local Inala shopping precinct.

What happens next?

Council has prepared the improvement proposal in response to community feedback. Feedback from the community relating to the look and feel of the existing centre highlighted the need for improvements to:

  • overall streetscape amenity
  • safety and security
  • placemaking elements and identity
  • planting and greenery
  • traffic management.
Precinct improvement proposal The improvement proposal will be on display in the Inala neighbourhood shopping precinct and Forest Lake Ward Office in early May 2019.
Construction Construction is planned to begin early May 2019 and be completed by mid-2019. Council will consult with each business in the shopping centre to ensure minimal disruption occurs during construction. Access to every shop in the shopping centre will be maintained during business hours.
Activation event Local residents and businesses will be invited to an activation event to celebrate the completion of the project and also promote the upgraded neighbourhood centre. More information will be provided in the coming months.

Proposed improvements

Proposed improvements include:

  • upgrading pedestrian and street lighting
  • renewing sections of footpath surface and upgrading pedestrian refuge and ramp crossing points
  • groundcover plantings to new and existing garden beds
  • new standard street furniture
  • refreshing existing place-making elements and installing new decorative patterns onto the upgraded footpath.

The updated improvement proposal plan can be viewed at the Forest Lake Ward Office/Inala Library building, corner Wirraway Parade and Corsair Avenue, Inala.

The improvement proposal addresses many of the issues raised in the community survey, undertaken in December 2018. The project will not deliver works on private property, security monitoring equipment or community facilities such as public toilets.

Construction timing and impacts

Construction will start early May 2019 and is planned to be complete by mid-2019, weather and site conditions permitting. Construction will primarily take place between 7am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Council will maintain access to local businesses during business hours throughout the construction period. Some of the nearby carparks and delivery bays on Biota Street will be temporarily closed where construction occurs.

Properties in close proximity to the work may experience some construction noise, dust and vibration. Due to workplace health and safety requirements reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

Council is committed to minimising the impact of the works on the local community as much as possible. We would like to thank local residents in advance for their patience and understanding during these works.
