Design strategy for Brisbane

Developing a design strategy is one of the ways Brisbane City Council is carefully planning for a growing city, and is a key action from Brisbane's Future Blueprint. The design strategy will ensure that as Brisbane grows, we, and future generations, can enjoy Brisbane's beautiful climate and connect with family and friends in places that make our city great.

Public consultation on Design-led City - a design strategy for Brisbane and the draft New World City design guide - Subtropical homes for a Brisbane lifestyle has now closed. Council will be reviewing the feedback received to inform the final design strategy and design guide. The design guide is an example of how the strategy will be implemented, and other initiatives and actions will arise when the final strategy is published.

Design strategy consultation

Design-led City - a design strategy for Brisbane will outline a vision for design quality across Brisbane's built environment. The consultation document sets out the draft priorities and design values to guide design outcomes for all development and infrastructure projects, and identifies potential actions to support, regulate, reward and implement quality design in Brisbane.

Draft design guide - low-to-medium density housing

The draft New World City design guide - Subtropical homes for a Brisbane lifestyle provides advice and support to encourage quality design of townhouses and apartments up to five storeys. This design guide complements Brisbane City Plan 2014 (City Plan) by identifying key design processes and elements to be considered in the design of low-to-medium density housing.

Brisbane's Future Blueprint

After input from more than 100,000 residents, Council released Brisbane's Future Blueprint in June 2018. It has eight principles to guide decisions for Brisbane. One of these principles is ensure best practice design that complements the character of Brisbane.

As Brisbane grows, requiring high-quality and attractive design will mean new development makes good use of space and matches the area in which it is built. Read about the associated actions and our progress
