Residential Care Buildings
All residential care buildings built prior to 1 June 2007 must comply with Queensland Development Code (QDC) MP 2.3 - Fire Safety in Existing Residential Care Buildings by Thursday 1 September 2016.
Residential care building owners were able to apply to Council for an extension of up to Thursday 1 September 2017 to comply with the fire safety standard. Under the Building Act 1975, Council is not able to assess applications received after 1 September 2016.
Council can only approve an extension of time if it is satisfied that undue hardship would be caused to the occupants of the RCB if the application were refused. Council will decide applications made before 1 September 2016 within 20 business days. As part of the process, applications will be referred to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.
More information on residential care building requirements is available from the Department of Housing and Public Works.
