About the project

The Former Engine Room Revitalisation project restored the building and converted it into a café for the community to enjoy. The works included the construction of public toilets on the site to address the current lack of public facilities available to the local community and support the area’s recreation potential.

The works involved:

  • restoring the distinctive internal and external brickwork
  • installing a new ceiling and suspended flooring
  • constructing a new 54m² timber deck overlooking the river
  • installing air-conditioning, ceiling insulation, new windows and doors and CCTV security
  • providing accessible ramps and steps to the building
  • providing new public toilet facilities
  • connecting new services including gas, sewer and water
  • landscaping works.

The café features an outdoor seating area with river views. Operating hours are permitted between 7am-10pm, seven days a week, with the deck closing at 6pm.

Project benefits

The restoration of the former Engine Room is in line with Council’s River’s Edge Strategy, which aims to improve access and activity on and alongside the inner-city reaches of the Brisbane River. The River’s Edge strategy was developed and refined using ideas and feedback from Brisbane residents, businesses and river user groups, of which 98 per cent indicated support for the creation of riverside eating and drinking precincts.
