There’s heaps on offer to keep you busy this school holidays – from creative pursuits to BMXing, skating and star gazing – there’s no excuse for a boring holiday period!
For budding stars
Enjoy the first Lord Mayor’s Children’s Concert series at SunPAC in Sunnybank, offering tweens (up to 12 years old) the chance to embrace their star quality by learning circus tricks, balloon twisting and how to clown from Australia’s leading contemporary circus company, Casus. For family fun, a 45-minute cabaret performance will have you laughing aloud to jaw-dropping acts by Brisbane’s leading circus performers. And the best news? They’re all free! (Check for booking requirements).
If the small screen is more your thing, learn the tricks and trades of Hollywood with a filmmaking workshop at the Garden City Library. Learn how you can fly, teleport or become invisible by using iPads, tripods, lights, green screens and props.
Get the cardboard, glue and paints ready with a range of craft workshops for budding artists at several Council libraries. Ideal for kids aged 4-8 years old, there’s a different activity each week, making it the perfect boredom busting activity for young artistic minds!
Pack a picnic and head to Mt Coot-tha with more to see and do for all tastes. Enjoy the lush surrounds of Brisbane Botanic Gardens or if you’re a music lover, take in the final concert for Queensland Band Association Youth Camp. Why not add a spot of stargazing at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium or bring your runners and hit the Mt Coot-tha trails? For BMX fans and adrenaline junkies, Mt Coot-tha features over 23 kilometres of mountain bike trails, just remember to check out the difficulty ratings first!
For an action packed outing head to any of Council’s 19 parks with BMX facilities. From Bracken Ridge Skate Plaza (one of Australia’s biggest BMX tracks) to DM Henderson Park in MacGregor, different skill levels are catered for, with dirt tracks, built-up dirt hills and jumps.
If skateboarding, longboarding, scootering or blading is more your style, there are 35 skate parks across the city to choose from. Learn the basics, improve skills, land new tricks and have fun at a Chillout event these holidays.
